The Making of the “Witness Flag” – A Custom Flag for Newport’s Revolutionary History

Posted by Trip Wolfskehl on

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Newport Historical Society partnered with us to create something truly meaningful: a “Witness Flag.” This special flag is designed for the historic homes in Newport—houses that quite literally witnessed the events of the Revolution 250 years ago. And in Newport, there are more than 200 pre-Revolutionary War homes still standing, each with a story to tell.

Designing a Flag Worthy of 250 Years of History

We began the design phase with multiple concepts that incorporated the official Newport Historical Society logo with traditional flag-design principles: bold colors, simplified design. Yes—we knowingly bent a few classic vexillology rules here (#1 - NO WRITING!) But for a commemoration of this significance, clear messaging and historical storytelling were our top priorities.

Made for Easy, Historic-Home-Friendly Display

Because these flags will hang on centuries-old structures, we focused on creating a display method that was:

  • Damage-free (no drilling into clapboards)

  • Hardware-free

  • Easy for homeowners to display immediately

The solution was a door-hanging banner style—a format that can be placed over a door knocker or fixed with a simple thumbtack. This ensures every historic homeowner can participate without compromising the integrity of their property.

A Custom Flag for a City Steeped in Revolutionary Heritage

The final product is a custom-made Witness Flag created specifically for the Newport Historical Society’s 250th-anniversary initiative. We’re honored to contribute to this moment in Newport’s story, and we can’t wait to see these flags proudly displayed across the city—from the Point to Historic Hill, from Washington Street to Thames Street—marking the homes that stood through the birth of America.

If you're lucky enough to live in Newport, AND be living in a 'Witness House' and want to support local history, you can purchase your flag at the Newport Historical Society Store located in Washington Square today!
